Facts About Publishing and Self-publishing Your Books

Facts About Publishing and Self-publishing Your Books. Some publishers such as Publish America don't ask for your money right away and offer to publish you for free under their contract that is only enforced on you the author but if they break any section of the contract you have to hire an attorney to take them to court in their city specifically.

Publishing your books can be difficult and very confusing.  There are several publishers out there that want your book and do not require an agent to submit it.  These publishers can be very deceptive.  My personal experience with several publishers has shown me that many of the self-publishers want thousands of dollars up front prior to publishing your work and there is no guarantee that you wil ever see that money again.  There are the old fashioned publishers that require you to submit a querry letter with your manuscript and some even accept unquerried via agents.  These can be your best bet though they don't respond very fast and when they do it isn't always good news due to the fact that some only publish a limited number of books per year.

Some publishers such as Publish America don't ask for your money right away and offer to publish you for free under their contract that is only enforced on you the author but if they break any section of the contract you have to hire an attorney to take them to court in their city specifically.  Also payments of royalties are low to you until you have sold a certain amount and their high prices make it difficult to sell.  On top of all of that they spam your email to try and get you to buy your own book which you will be paid royalties for.  This scam is circulating and it is a popular publisher that you should be aware of.  Do your research and you will discover who this is online due to the great number of unhappy authors.

I have found that amazon offers its own publisher and they do not ask for any money up front unless you want a better sales package or their services beyond the free publishing.  The down side I found is that royalties are not very high and never grow in percentage.  The publisher gets around 80%.  Lulu.com is a confusing free site to publish and offers the author 80% royalties which is false.  They subtract the cost of printing the book first and ask for 20% of whatever you set your royalties at.

So far I have found the easiest site to use is OffTheBookShelf.com.  It is owned by Scott Weisenthal an employee from NBC Universal and though it is new to the business, there are no surprises.  Everything is upfront.  It offers free Ebook and Epub publishing, editing services at reasonable costs, cover design fro free or cost, and a one time set up fee per book of $35 for paperback formats.  You can set your royalties and keep the costs down to sell quantity without taking a big loss to your royalties because they don't tack on a large percentage for themselves.  Fact :  I have three books published through them in Ebook and Epub formats and one soon to be released in a 6x9 paperback.

Wow...very informative and much needed info, Kevin. Nice work:-)

You know me Jaye, I speak my mind and try to tell people the truth to help them so that they don't make the same mistakes that we did. lol

lol, yes you do speak your mind, but that was some very informative info that I may need down the road (working on book #2). You know I know about PA, but lulu was an actual thought of mine, but now a second thought...lol, b'blessed and continue to do what you do so well:)

There is one called createspace as well that distributes directly through amazon.com. You could try it as well. I am very blessed with my writing, family, and friends.

Thanks, Kevin - very helpful :-)

For any faithful readers that I might have, please go to the link below and vote for my newly released psycological thriller Wrath to win the commercial slot through the publisher. Thank you. http://offthebookshelf.com/great_american_author

You don't need a so-called "self-publishing company" at all. There's a better way. Check out LightningSource.com and see my blog post here:
